Baby Buddy is your personal baby support expert who will guide you through your pregnancy and the first six months of your baby’s life. The app has been designed with parents and health professionals to help you give your baby the best start in life and support your health and well-being. Baby Buddy is endorsed by the Department of Health, the Royal College of Midwives, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association, the Institute of Health Visitors, and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. Baby Buddy is featured in Better Births, supports the Maternity Transformation Programme and supports key public health priorities including maternal and infant mental health. We'd love you to help us make Baby Buddy even better. Your opinion counts. All you need to do is take a few minutes to complete three short in-app questionnaires that will appear after you have been using the app for a while. This will then also unlock a new outfit or accessory for you Baby Buddy! Baby Buddy has been created by the child health and well-being charity Best Beginnings with our development partners Despark. The app has been made possible thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund, the Tedworth Charitable Trust and the Guys and St Thomas’ Charity. Please make sure that you complete the three short in-app questionnaires that will appear after you have been using the app for a while. They only take a few minutes and once you’ve done them you’ll unlock a new outfit or accessory for your Buddy. The ORCHA Review and Service
The ORCHA Baseline Review (“OBR”) is ORCHA’s first level of assessment and involves a detailed ‘desktop’ analysis of Digital Health solutions looking across all of the key areas of regulation and compliance.
Whilst a high scoring App is not guaranteed to be effective or safe, or a poorly scoring App is not necessarily ineffective or unsafe, it does mean that the relevant Developer has taken more or less care over the Apps compliance with these key Standards than other similar Apps. In the critical area of health and care, we believe that developers should take compliance with Standards extremely seriously.
ORCHA are not promoting or recommending any particular Apps through this process but are providing impartial information about an Apps compliance with Standards and a mechanism for end users to easily identify those Apps that best meet those Standards and to check which ones don’t. The ORCHA Review process is the most advanced review mechanism for health and care Apps. We evaluate more Apps than anyone, so that you can be aware of which Apps are safe to use, and which are not. An ORCHA Score below 65% would indicate that an App has some issues that users should investigate further before using the App. Scores below 45% indicate that an App has considerable issues or challenges and, in its current form, is potentially unhelpful or unsafe. Conversely, Apps which score 65% and higher achieve ‘ORCHA Approved’ status as they demonstrate a good performance level across our Review criteria.
ORCHA’s Review has 7 stages:
Stage 1: Exclusion Filters
All Apps available on the App Store and Google Play in the ‘health, wellbeing/fitness and medical’ sections are filtered and organised into over 350 health and care condition categories.
Stage 2: Levels
The ORCHA App Classification system categorises Apps in one of five levels (0-4) based on their area of focus and functional capabilities. These Levels span from Simple Wellbeing (Level 0) to Regulated Apps which are subject to formal regulation (Level 4).
Stage 3: Functions
Our App Evaluation also includes gathering information on all of the Apps’ key functions and features. Consequently, users can search for Apps according to their functional capabilities.
Stage 4: Review Domains
We score Apps according to their Data Privacy, Clinical Assurance and User Experience. Each of these Review Domains receives a separate score, which are then combined to give the App’s overall ORCHA Score.
Stage 5: The Score
The ORCHA Review comprises questions across the three Review Domains, with some questions earning positive points and some earning negative points. An App’s ORCHA Score is built up from the answers to each of these questions, ensuring that all Apps are evaluated fairly and uniformly.
Stage 6: Developer Notification and Publication
When the Review is complete, the relevant developer is notified and given the opportunity to preview the Review ahead of its publication. Previewing the Review allows the developer to highlight any issues before it is published on our platforms. Once the notification period has expired, we publish the Review across our platforms.
Stage 7: Post Publication Review Monitoring and Management
All ORCHA Reviews remain valid until a new version of the App is released. If a new version of an App is not produced within 18 months of the current version, the App is marked as ‘Out of Date’, and its ORCHA Score starts to degrade at a rate of 5% per month. New versions of Apps will be automatically detected and subsequently Re-Reviewed by ORCHA.
